High School Leo Club Members Deliver Valentine's Day Joy

In the past, the Haddonfield Memorial High School Leo Club has hosted an extremely popular event each February – the Senior Citizens Valentine’s Dance, also known as the Seniors Prom. But when this year’s dance was canceled due to ongoing COVID-19 restrictions, Heather Lacy, a Lions Club member and co-coordinator of the Leo Club with teacher and club advisor Maggie Gammie, came up with a great alternative. She suggested that the group make tissue paper flowers and Valentine cards for the seniors this year.

“The service project was Heather Lacy’s idea,” Gammie said, “and our Leo students sprang into action to bring it to life!”

“We were sad that we couldn’t hold our Senior Citizens Prom for Valentine’s Day,” Gammie said, "but delighted to be able to offer this instead.”

A team of more than 25 Leo Club students picked up supplies to make the tissue paper flowers and cards to go with them, and three students -- Maya Feinstein, Julia Hart, and Katrina Arndt – helped Gammie organize the flowers. Then, on the Friday before Valentine’s Day, the flowers and cards – enough for each resident to receive one – were delivered to Collingswood Manor and Brandywine Senior Living.

“I was blown away by the students’ creativity,” Gammie said. “And some told me how much fun it was to take a break from their computer screens and do something with their hands!”

“It was a win-win!”
